Three UTFSM Hydrology Group students win the 2026 ANID National Master's Scholarship

Their theses address water resources, climate change and the use of artificial intelligence in engineering.

Three students from the UTFSM Hydrology Group have been awarded the 2026 ANID National Master's Scholarship (Beca de Magíster Nacional ANID).

Their theses address water resources, climate change and the use of artificial intelligence in engineering:

  • Jocelyn Lugo: atmospheric rivers in Chile, quantifying their impact on hydrometeorological extremes and water resources with machine learning approaches. Advisor: Álvaro Ossandón; co-advisor: Joaquín Meza.
  • José María Araya: a comparative evaluation of conceptual hydrological models and machine learning models for streamflow forecasting in the Nilahue subbasin. Advisor: Álvaro Ossandón.
  • Catalina Ferrara: downscaling daily precipitation in the Maipo River basin by combining ERA5-Land and rain gauge observations with statistical and deep learning techniques.

The scholarship will allow them to work full time on their theses.

Congratulations to Jocelyn Lugo, José María Araya and Catalina Ferrara.
