Sendai, Japan, March 4 and 5, 2024. Dr. Joaquín Meza, faculty member of the UTFSM Hydrology Group, was invited to the 12th International Symposium on Water Environment Systems, with Perspective of Global Safety. The event, organized by Tohoku University, aims to strengthen collaboration between its Department of Civil Engineering and researchers from universities outside Japan.

12th International Symposium on Water Environment Systems

Dr. Meza presented the talk "Assessing Probable Maximum Precipitation (PMP) Estimates in Chile Using Statistical GEV Distribution and Physically Based Approaches", on two methods for estimating probable maximum precipitation (PMP) in Chile:

  • A statistical approach, based on the generalized extreme value (GEV) distribution, that characterizes PMP from historical precipitation data.
  • A physically based approach that estimates PMP with the WRF numerical model from the atmospheric mechanisms that produce extreme events.

The two methods complement each other to better assess hydrometeorological risk and plan water infrastructure.

Besides the academic sessions, participants visited areas affected by the 2011 Tohoku tsunami to see its impact on communities and infrastructure first-hand.

Dr. Meza also met members of Tohoku University's Hydro-Environmental System Laboratory (HEST (opens in a new tab)) to share knowledge and explore collaborations.
