Physical modeling of meteotsunamis on the coast of Chile

This master's thesis sits at the boundary between tsunami dynamics and meteorology. You will study the generation, propagation and coastal amplification of meteotsunamis (tsunamis triggered by atmospheric disturbances) by coupling a mesoscale atmospheric model (MPAS) with a coastal hydrodynamic propagation model (ADCIRC). You will validate the results with atmospheric pressure and sea level measurements.

The work will identify the meteorological forcings that cause these events and characterize how the Chilean coast responds, at a time when evidence of their occurrence keeps growing.

We are looking for students interested in tsunamis, meteorology, numerical modeling and Python programming, or keen to learn them.

You will join an active research group with international collaborations.

Joint supervision: Prof. Joaquín Meza and Prof. Patricio Catalán.
